Artist Statement
The Egg Plate Series brings together two of my recurring obsessions: antique plateware and the beauty of an egg yolk. Each painting begins with a plate I’ve loved or collected — shapes that already hold stories — and is paired it with a bright yolk. The plate then becomes a little world where logic doesn’t apply, a place where food can sit inside pattern, and pattern can drift into the illogical. Working in watercolour allows looseness to live alongside detail - the florals shift between precision and play, while the yolk anchors the work with something simple, familiar, and warmly absurd. The Egg Plate Series at its heart is a chance to let charm outweigh sense.

aplacetopaint_Vivien Walsh is a watercolour artist/illustrator, and professional food stylist based on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Her paintings are a playful mix of whimsy and precision, inspired by her love of colour, pattern, and her extensive collection of beautiful plateware. Her background in food styling informs her sense of composition and detail, while the creativity of painting allows her to explore the joy in the imaginative and the illogical.
